  Planet Earth: BBC Series DVD/BD

In honor of Earth Day today I thought I would start off with a review of the BBC series Planet Earth.

Initally I was a little aprehensive about dropping the hefty amount that was demanded by our good old chaps over at the BBC for this series that I had hardly heard about, but what a pregnant woman wants a pregnant woman gets (from Netflix at least). As we slid back into the couch in my darkened living room we were simply taken away by the clarity and beauty of a world we hardly know.

The cinematography is some of the best you can get, and in glorious HD the clarity and wonder was just stunning. Each episode takes you deep within a seemingly alien environment where you learn about creatures that you have never even imagined. My favorites would be Caves and Deep Ocean, which really just blew me away. To note, our daughter was born in the midst of this so it took us some time to get all the episodes down, but the calming beautiful score and picture help calm a newborn at four am.

The biggest let down about this series for me would be that there are no real extras at all. Being a student of film I really wanted to know at least a little of the behind the scenes that went on into making this piece. It really seems like such an insane undertaking that I am sure they could make a whole series of creating it.. Other than that, the series is totally rewatchable (is that a word) and totally worth owning, either on DVD or Blu-Ray.
