Baby Einstein: Baby's First Sounds - by Amy Yanok

I was excited to view yet another Baby Einstein DVD .... I'm always as excited and thrilled as my son is to see what new & fun things they are gonna teach my children on these videos. First thing my 3 yr old son noticed on the cover was the big, bright Bee and wanted to watch it right away. I also have an 8 1/2 month old son and this was his first experience watching Baby Einstein.

They both were engrossed in the DVD right from the start with some of the newer puppet characters that opened the show up - one new puppet character was a Bee and also some
Sheep puppets saying "B, B, Baaaa" .... It teaches children some first words and how to pronounce them in English as well as a handful of other languages. This DVD pretty much kept both my 3 yr old and 8 1/2 month old sons' attention the whole time.

I would definitely recommend this Baby Einstein to all families and give this one a total thumbs up ... another Baby Einstein to add to your collection!

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

When I watched the first Harold & Kumar I was simply blown away. We were still in college and my four friends (yeah, I had friends back then) were in a cramped living room watching it in total darkness with an older projector and a laptop, and one thing was for sure, we were on the floor laughing hysterically for most of the film. When we heard the sequel was coming out needless to say we were a little pumped. Honestly, I don't think we were let down at all.

I was really curious as to where they were going to go with a sequel. It is refreshing to take a break from laughing at Judd Aptow and get some chuckles out of a different stoner comedy. Their adventure they have is just as ridiculous as their first, and Neil Patrick Harris is just phenomenally hilarious.

I would have to say that if you are planning on going out to take in a flick this weekend, and you enjoyed the first one, you may want to skip Baby Mama and check out this flick. I would actually opt to have stayed at home and watched it on DVD when that gets released. Seeing it with a few friends while having some drinks (or whatever your into) at home would most likely prompt a warmer response to this film rather than traveling out into the public.

Bottom line: almost as good as the first, may want to wait for the DVD though.

  Planet Earth: BBC Series DVD/BD

In honor of Earth Day today I thought I would start off with a review of the BBC series Planet Earth.

Initally I was a little aprehensive about dropping the hefty amount that was demanded by our good old chaps over at the BBC for this series that I had hardly heard about, but what a pregnant woman wants a pregnant woman gets (from Netflix at least). As we slid back into the couch in my darkened living room we were simply taken away by the clarity and beauty of a world we hardly know.

The cinematography is some of the best you can get, and in glorious HD the clarity and wonder was just stunning. Each episode takes you deep within a seemingly alien environment where you learn about creatures that you have never even imagined. My favorites would be Caves and Deep Ocean, which really just blew me away. To note, our daughter was born in the midst of this so it took us some time to get all the episodes down, but the calming beautiful score and picture help calm a newborn at four am.

The biggest let down about this series for me would be that there are no real extras at all. Being a student of film I really wanted to know at least a little of the behind the scenes that went on into making this piece. It really seems like such an insane undertaking that I am sure they could make a whole series of creating it.. Other than that, the series is totally rewatchable (is that a word) and totally worth owning, either on DVD or Blu-Ray.

  My Boy Jack: DVD Review

Awesome. That’s what I thought when I was throwing this movie into my DVD player. Awesome. Daniel Radcliffe as a solder in a war movie, totally sweet. I get to watch Harry Potter blow German brains out. Ok, maybe that’s the testosterone talking, but really, looking at the box art there is all of this mud everywhere and screaming faces. So sorry my friend, this is a movie for your grandma.

So, I am honestly not going to pretend that I know anything about what happened with the British in the first world war, or that I know an ounce about Ruyard Kipling (except he wrote The Jungle Book, which I though was pretty boring when I was 13.) After watching this film I feel like a freaking expert.

Now, the acting is top notch, no doubt about it. But, really, there is just a ton of crying and hardly any war scenes at all. Actually, there really is only a couple, but I won’t tell you all about it.. Just know that if you are planning on grabbing this for the action, don’t. If you are a huge Potter fan, here is a chance for you to see him with a moustache (although he still looks 15.) Basically, if your under 55 I think it’s a sleeper..

  Sharkwater: DVD/Blu-Ray

You know, there are those times when I know nothing at all about the film that I am sliding into my player. I sit back on the couch and try to soak into what the filmmaker is putting in front of my eyes, and I love when I pop in a piece that I know absolutely nothing about and it changes the way you look at the world around you in a profound and mesmerizing way. Sharkwater is one of those films.

Filmmaker Rob Stewart narrates his unrelenting tale of the personal struggle he is having with the world around him. A cinematic genius, he takes you into an often feared and greatly misunderstood world of the deep ocean to swim with sharks. The views are simply breathtaking; the cinematography is on par with the BBC’s Planet Earth series. I seriously cannot recommend this film to anyone who has a love for nature.

I seriously am having a tough time summing up the film for you guys, I really don’t want to ruin any moment of the film for you. Just know that Rob Stewart takes you on a journey that is not only an inspiration to filmmakers everywhere, but an inspiration to everyone. Check out the trailer for yourself at www.sharkwater.com, you won’t be disappointed.
