Two and a Half Men – Season 4

Ducky asked me to sit in and write a review for him this time. Plus he gave me the DVDs to one of my favorite TV shows so I said what the hell, I’ll give it a try.

I didn’t start watching Two and a Half Men till summer rerun time before season 3. I thought it would just be another dumb comedy and I didn’t want to waste my time. Man, was I wrong. This turned out to be one of the funniest shows I’ve watched in a long time. My wife and I now watch all of them along with all the reruns so we’ve seen every episode at least twice.

If you have never seen this show then you don’t know what you’re missing. You should either run out and get seasons 1-3 first to get caught up, or watch all of the reruns that are on all the time. Or, just start with the season 4 DVDs and get hooked anyway.

The show stars Charlie Sheen as Charlie Harper, a single playboy jingle writer that tries to have sex with almost every woman he meets. Jon Cryer plays his brother Alan who has been thrown out of his house by his wife, (and I think must be the gayest straight guy around) and Angus T. Jones plays Alan’s son Jake who stays with Charlie and Alan on weekends. The amount of stuff Charlie and Alan try to get past Jake and all the sex jokes the shows' creators Lee Aronsohn and Chuck Lorre try to get by the censors, make for a lot of great comedy. I’m always amazed with what they get by with.

The season 4 DVD set begins with the episode where Alan’s second wife, Kandi played by April Bowlby (one very hot lady), has thrown him out of the house and Alan begs Charlie to let him move back in and ends with the episode where Charlie and Alan’s mother Evelyn, played by Holland Taylor, meets her future 5th husband Teddy played by Robert Wagner. This story line is continued in season 5.

To tell the truth, I buy DVDs of TV shows that are still on the air for one thing. Gag reels. I love them and this one has a great gag reel along with the 24 episodes from season 4. I always thought gag reels were one way to really judge the actors and also see what they have to go through to create entertainment for the rest of us.

My recommendation for this DVD set is to buy it, watch it and laugh your ass off, and then give it to some person that needs to lighted up. You’ll make their day.

  Strait Jacket on DVD

Out of the far east comes the techno-magical beautifully illustrated DVD Strait Jacket, a story of a place where science and sorcery are commonplace in society.

Now, I haven't sat and watched an anime in a while so I admit that I'm a little rusty when it comes to these stories. When I started watching this one it looked promising, the artwork is pretty great compared to some of the junk out there, but the story to me feels a bit overdone. The mixing of magic and science is portrayed very well in several Japanese animation classics like Fullmetal Alchemist, so I didn't feel as though the story broke any real new ground.

The translation to me seemed sloppy as well, the characters seemed to be contradicting each other much of the time as well as the emphasis of their voices seemed to be off.

This is certainly no Ninja Scroll or Akira, and while it may appeal to the more hardcore fans I probably wouldn't suggest it for mass appeal..

People who don't read good for movies
This is seriously TWIZTED! The Idiot Clown Possie somehow figured out how to work a video camera and made a movie, which is really outstanding considering the fact that these two don't even know how to read.

  Thank God
Apparently moron director Brett Ratner was going to screw up a Superman film but thankfully it never happened becuase he was busy screwing up X-Men.

He told MTV News that he was going to have half the movie take place on Krypton, which would have probably been the dumbest thing ever and even alienated (ha!) people even more than the last film did. Who the hell wants to see a movie like that?

Anyway, Brett Ratner sucks, and I have no idea why he keeps getting work. Seriously, the last pitch he gave was for a Guitar Hero movie. Everyone knows that a Rock Band movie would be waaaaaay better.

Tobey Maguire continues to personally attack me
My dream for Sony to reboot the biggest disappointment in comic movies has been thrown into the crapper today. Reports are in that the big wuss Tobey Maguire will return to his pathetic version of Spider-Man, officially ruining any chance that the character will ever crawl out of the gutter.

Tobey has pushed Sony to flush $50 million down his web toilet and they guy only has to put in half days shooting Spider-Wuss 4 and 5 over a period of six months. So, he sucked in the last film, now he will only be putting in half days, so these two will be an improvement I'm sure. Oh well, hopefully the Venom movie will suck worse.

Smallville Season 7: DVD and Blu-ray
Oh yeah! One of my favorite little parts of geekdom is the WB's Smallville; I've been glued to the tv every Thursday since the first season and this one was probably the best so far.

The effects are getting better, the ladies are getting hotter, and we are seeing less and less of Lana. Yeah, so I dug her for the first couple years, but her whining is just so tired I'm beginning to think that it is her meteor power. Her insurance company must hate her, she wakes up in that hospital so much her deductible must be insane.

Kara popped into the season giving everyone another reason to watch a scantily clad female heroine prance around Clark as he attempts to keep everything calm, which was humorous at times.

Bizzaro was the big villain of the season, and I dug it. He wasn't a backwards idiot like the comics at all, which was a nice change.

The finale was pretty similar to every other finale, some huge event that there could be no return from, which will somehow be resolved within the first couple episodes in the next season, which isn't totally a negative trait, they make big cheese in Smallville..

  News & Excuses
Sorry to all for not posting for a bit, we have been crazy busy moving to our new home. Needless to say that it didn't help matters that we were without power for a few days due to the hellish wind storm afterwords. I know my constant readers are eagerly waiting every post, no fear, they are returning...

  Criterion Blu-Ray on it's way

The Criterion Collection just got better.. They just released the list of the first batch of flicks that they are popping out on Blu-Ray, so get your debit cards ready.

Criterion is known for putting out DVD's that are far superior to anything else out there, and their Blu-Ray versions will be no exeption to the rule I'm sure. The list so far includes: The Third Man, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Bottle Rocket, The Last Emperor, and Chungking Express. They also have an exchange program where you can send them your DVD version and get the Blu-Ray copy for $25. In-freaking-sane.

For anyone who is a film lover this collection is essential. There is really no better way to have a version of a film. Lets just hope for a Terminator 2 edition to come out.
